Look For The Silver Lining…

“My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. 4 But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.” James 1:2-4 NKJV

This week has been a roller coaster of ups and downs…good and bad.  Just when I decide that I am going to have a great day at work, it never fails…everything that could possibly go wrong seems to go wrong.  Why is that?

I know that the enemy would love to see me defeated, but I can’t give him that pleasure.  I know in whom I have placed my trust.   My God is much greater than any problem that the enemy throws my way.

Of course this doesn’t mean that I don’t get upset when things don’t go as planned.  I can choose to either wallow in self-pity or count my blessings.  On those extra “stormy days” I always have to remind myself to look for the “silver lining” in every situation that comes my way.

For years, I was a prisoner of circumstance.  If everything was going great, I was happy.  However, more often than not, things were not going the way I wanted them to and this made me quite unhappy.  Unfortunately, there were seasons in my life when I seemed to have more bad days than good.  Everything was a shade of gray.  I knew that God was able to help me but He seemed so far away.

Then, a friend invited me to join her to a women’s retreat.   I didn’t know anyone except the one who invited me.  I almost allowed that to stop me from going.  I don’t make friends very easily because I’m just not very outgoing and social.  Yet, I overcame and accepted the invitation.  I can honestly say that going to that weekend retreat was the best decision I could have made.   During that weekend, I learned a very important life lesson.  I learned that Joy was a choice…so simple yet so profound.  I didn’t have to be a prisoner anymore.  I could choose to look past the problems and be joyful.

I wish I could say that I never allowed life to get me down again but, that is not true.   I still have days when I am not so joyful but, I have more days when I am able to rejoice in my maker.

As the saying goes, “when life throws you lemons, make lemonade” or lemon meringue pie. 🙂  Whatever you choose to make with your lemons, see them as a gift from God.  They were sent for the sole purpose of making you stronger not bitter.

Joyfully,

Abigail Shaw
